Suzanne Collins was born to Jane Brady Collins and Lieutenant Colonel Michael John Collin on August 10, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut. Her father was an Air Force officer who saw combat in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Collins is the youngest of four kids.

She spent most of her life in the eastern United States, despite the fact that her military family was always on the move. Collins earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham in 1980. She attended Indiana University Bloomington, where she graduated with a BA in the arts in 1985. She then continued her education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she received a Master of Fine Arts in theatrical writing in 1989.

Working as a novelist and screenwriter for several television shows, she has amassed a considerable fortune. She has been working as a professional writer since 1991, first focusing on composing plays for kids. As a co-writer, she contributed to the success of the holiday TV spectacular Santa Baby. She is the author of the entire fantasy series The Underland Chronicles, which is set in a made-up world beneath New York City.

Collins is best known as the author of The Hunger Games trilogy. For more than 60 weeks, the trilogy has been included on the New York Times bestseller list. As time went on, Lions Gate Entertainment bought the rights to turn the trilogy into movies. Her two fantasy novels have done very well, therefore she has become rather wealthy in the last decade. She’s written more than 10 books.

Collins also became the Commissioner of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation in the cabinet of Governor John R. McKernan Jr. in 1987. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush named her to lead the Small Business Administration’s New England region. Shortly after the election of Democrat Bill Clinton in 1992, she relocated to Massachusetts, where she served as Deputy State Treasurer under Joe Malone.

She worked there until 1996, when she declared her candidacy for the Senate seat being vacated by her former boss William Cohen, who had departed to become Secretary of Defense in the Clinton administration.

She beat out four other candidates in the primary with the help of Cohen’s public endorsement and went on to face Joe Brennan, her Democratic opponent from the 1994 gubernatorial election. At the end of the day, she beat Brennan 49% to 44%.

Collins returned to Maine and became the state’s first female governor after she won the Republican primary in 1994, beating out seven other candidates. During the campaign, Republican establishment figures were largely silent in support of her, while conservative groups attacked her for her more progressive social views. She came in third in the main election, behind the victorious Independent candidate Angus King and the victorious Democrat Joseph E. Brennan.

Collins won a seat in the Senate of the United States of America in 1996. She promised throughout the campaign that she would “just serve two terms” if she were to be successful.
