Suzanne Collins was born to Jane Brady Collins and Lieutenant Colonel Michael John Collin on August 10, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut. Her father was an Air Force officer who saw combat in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Collins is the youngest of four kids.

She spent most of her life in the eastern United States, despite the fact that her military family was always on the move. Collins returned to Maine and became the state’s first female governor after she won the Republican primary in 1994, beating out seven other candidates. During the campaign, Republican establishment figures were largely silent in support of her, while conservative groups attacked her for her more progressive social views. She came in third in the main election, behind the victorious Independent candidate Angus King and the victorious Democrat Joseph E. Brennan.
