That was when he turned 10, so that was a significant milestone. Ray followed in his older brother’s footsteps and began training at the Palmer Park Recreation Center for boxing after he graduated from Parkdale High School.
In spite of being a shy boy from Wilmington City, North Carolina who went through a lot of boring situations, Ray always kept a positive attitude and worked hard.Leonard, who had a natural gift for boxing, soon began to dominate the competition. He won 145 of his 150 bouts. Sugar Ray went on to win two National Golden Gloves, a Pan American gold medal, and two Amateur Athletic Union championships after that.
Sugar Ray Leonard Bio and Career
Leonard, then only sixteen, started boxing in 1969. He and his older sibling Roger were regulars at the Pational Park fitness centre. Later, ex-boxers Dave Jacobs and Janks Morton offered their services as his unpaid trainers. Young Ray competed in the AAU’s top level of competition, the National Division. Ray’s love for boxing, however, led him to lie about his age in order to compete in the Eastern Olympic Trials. For this reason, he progressed to the lightweight division’s semi-finals. Ray, a member of the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, lost a close semi-final bout due to a questionable judgement. He won the gold medal in the light welterweight division after defeating Andrés Aldama.
After his first retirement from boxing in 1984, Ray returned to the sport in 1996. The University of Maryland awarded Ray a scholarship. He committed himself to a curriculum of business administration and communication courses. In June of 1988, after several failed attempts, he declared a second comeback. On November 7th, 1988, he fought Don Lalonde at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. This bout ended up being one of the most divisive in recent memory. Leonard finished his professional career with a record of 36 victories, three defeats, and one tie. After his initial retirement, he experienced two more defeats. Household With Wife and Kids
