Colbert studied at Charleston’s Episcopal Porter-Gaud School, where he participated in the drama club. As a result of the procedure to repair his perforated eardrum, he experienced inner ear damage. It was impossible for him to continue scuba diving once he lost hearing in his right ear.

He began his studies in philosophy and acting at Virginia’s Hampden-Sydney College in 1982. In 1984 and ’86, Colbert attended Northwestern University to study acting.
