Stephan Bonnar was born in Hammond, Indiana on April 4, 1977, however he spent most of his childhood in Munster. There, he studied at Munster High School. He began training in wrestling when he was 10 years old, Tae Kwon Do when he was 12, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he was 22. At age 24, he began training in boxing and muay thai. At 16, he earned his Tae Kwon Do black belt. Bonnar won the Super heavyweight division of the Golden Gloves tournament on two separate occasions. He earned his doctorate in sports medicine from Purdue University in 200.

On Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter, Stephan was one of eight Light Heavyweight competitors. In the end, Forrest Griffin prevailed.Stephan beat Sam Hoger, James Irvin, and Keith Jardine after his loss to Griffin. He lost to Rashad Evans and Griffin twice.

A positive test for Boldenone at UFC 62 led to a nine-month suspension and a $5,000 fine. At UFC 73 in July 2007, he faced Mike Nichols and won for the eleventh time in his career.
