Ric was Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 23, 1944.He  moved to Cleveland, attended and graduated from Maple Heights High in 1963. He enrolled at Bowling Green State University but later left to focus on his music career instead.During this time, he met Benjamin Orr, who would become a lifelong friend and bandmate. ID Nirvana was the name they settled on after deciding to create a band in 1968 and touring colleges, notably Ohio State University, with their early performances.

In 1984, while making a music video for The Cars’ song “Drive,” he met 18-year-old model Paulina Porizkova while still married to his second wife Suzanne Ocasek. In 1988, Ric and Suzanne separated and eventually divorced. In 1989, Ric wed Paulina and the two started a family. Paulina secured an endorsement deal with Estée Lauder the year before they tied the knot, guaranteeing her $6 million year through 1995. She made $42 million before taxes on that one deal, which would be around $80 million in today’s currency after adjusted for inflation. Although they had been “peacefully separated” since May 2018, they remained legally married until Ric’s death in 2019.Ric Ocasek passed away on September 15, 2019, at the age of 75.
