Pelosi, who was born and grown in Baltimore and comes from a political family, attended and graduated from Trinity College in Washington, DC in 1962. She wed her college sweetheart, businessman Paul Pelosi. Before relocating to San Francisco with their kids, they lived in New York City. Pelosi, who had previously been devoted to her family and the Democratic Party as a volunteer, changed her focus to include politics. Nancy Pelosi was an intern in the Senate office of Senator Daniel Brewster in the 1960s (D-Maryland). This was the beginning of her foray into politics. She ultimately settled in San Francisco, where she got close with California state representative Phillip Burton of the 5th Congressional District. In 1976, she was elected to serve as a California delegate to the Democratic National Committee, a position she kept until 1996. She was active in the Democratic Party during the ’70s and ’80s, serving in positions such as finance chair for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Sala, Burton’s surviving spouse, took over after his death in 1983. When Sala Burton decided not to seek re-election, she appointed Nancy Pelosi to replace her. This practically ensured that Burton’s previous backers would switch to Pelosi. Pelosi was elected in a special election to succeed Sala after her untimely death only one month into her second term. In June of 1987, she was elected to represent California’s 5th Congressional District. Since 2003, Pelosi has led the House Democratic Caucus.
