Lord of the Dance and Riverdance choreographer Michael Flatley is ill with a “aggressive type of cancer.”
Wednesday, his team updated fans on the Irish dancer’s latest health report.
A message on his Instagram stated, “Dear friends, we have something personal to discuss, Michael Flatley has been diagnosed with an aggressive type of cancer.”
“He’s in the care of a fantastic medical staff after undergoing surgery. In light of the current situation, we shall have no further remark. All we ask is that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it. Teamlord.”
In 2003, Flatley was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, his second malignancy. A fan saw it when it was airing on MTV.
He said to the Irish Independent at the time, “In this case, it was complete serendipity that led to its discovery. Actually, I had never even noticed it before… It’s a scary place to be in certain cases.”
Many fans sent well-wishes for the 64-year-old Irish dancer underneath her post.
“The entire world is with you,” Michael, “in my thoughts and prayers.” a supporter said, while another admirer said, “Michael, I pray to God that you be blessed abundantly. It is my sincere wish that you may get well soon.”
“As someone who has overcome cancer, all I can suggest is to have faith in your doctors and be optimistic. Due to scientific advancement, several new drugs are now accessible “After reading what Flatley’s wife and son were writing, one fan wrote to them. “Be Courageous, Michael and Niamh”
The dancer, who was born in Chicago to Irish parents and shot to fame after his seven-minute “Riverdance” performance during the show’s intermission at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, is credited with helping to spread Irish dancing throughout the globe.
The play’s movie adaptation debuted at Dublin’s Point Theatre in February 1995. However, in October 1995, Flatley was let go following a disagreement with the show’s producers.
And then he made “Lord of the Dance.” According to Flatley’s website, the concert sold out venues all over the globe, including 21 performances in a row at London’s Wembley Arena.
Despite criticism, he told the Irish Independent that it was a “wonderful pleasure” for his dance company to perform at the 2017 inauguration of then-US President Donald Trump.
To mark its silver anniversary, the “Lord of the Dance” musical embarked on a tour in 2018.
