On July 16, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, James William Johnson entered the world. It was during his time as a high school student that he first developed a passion for the sport of football. While in high school, he crossed paths with some notable people, including Janis Joplin and G.W. Bailey, both of whom would go on to achieve fame. Johnson enrolled at the University of Arkansas after graduating from high school and was quickly recruited to play football there.
A football scholarship allowed him to continue his education at the University of Arkansas after high school. He spent two years at Arkansas before moving to Oklahoma State.
Johnson got his start in coaching in 1974 as an assistant at the University of Arkansas. Soon after, he was hired as Pitt’s defensive coordinator.
Returning to Oklahoma State University in 1977, he took over defensive operations. He led the Oklahoma Sooners as its head coach beginning in 1978. The Sooners went undefeated (12-0) under his guidance and eventually won the title. After being hired in 1979, he became the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach.
