Hacksaw Jim Duggan, a native of New York’s Glen Falls, was a standout athlete throughout his high school years. After graduating from high school, he went on to play football at Southern Methodist University, where he earned four varsity letters in football, track, wrestling, and basketball. He completed his degree in Applied Plant Biology and promptly signed with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. Following his departure from his contract, he suffered a chronic knee injury.
Jim Duggan’s Career
He started wrestling for Mid-South Wrestling and the Universal Wrestling Federation in 1979. Vince McMahon, Sr. noticed him in the end, and in 1987 he made his debut with the World Wrestling Federation and began a long and heated feud with the Russian wrestler Nikolai Volkoff.
He went on to win the first “Royal Rumble” in 1988 and wrestled in the WWF until the early 1990s.
After defeating Steve Austin for the US Heavyweight Championship in 1994, Duggan became an instant star in World Championship Wrestling.
In 1998, he came back. Since then, he has gone back and forth between working for World Wrestling Entertainment and wrestling on his own.
From 2001 till 2005, he participated on the independent circuit. He returned to WWE in 2005 and has made occasional cameos on shows including “Royal Rumble,” “Heat,” “Raw,” and “Smackdown.”
In 2009, he also returned to independent wrestling. In 2015, Global Force Wrestling recruited Duggan to help publicise its events and tours.
In addition to his wrestling career, he has also dabbled in film and television, appearing in projects like the British series “Games Master,” the zombie comedy “Pro Wrestlers vs. Zombies,” and an episode of Duck Dynasty.
