West was an active kid, but after his older brother David was killed in the Korean War, he became shy and introverted. He attended East Bank High School and played basketball for coach Duke Shaver from 1952 through 1956. West quickly rose to captain and starting small forward status on the freshman squad. A four-time All-State selection (1953–1956) and a single-year All-American (1956) highlight his career achievements. In 1956, under West’s direction, his high school won the state championship.
