Jerry West, the fifth of his parents Cecil and Howard’s six children, was born in 1938 in Chelyan, West Virginia. West was an active kid, but after his older brother David was killed in the Korean War, he became shy and introverted. He attended East Bank High School and played basketball for coach Duke Shaver from 1952 through 1956. West quickly rose to captain and starting small forward status on the freshman squad. A four-time All-State selection (1953–1956) and a single-year All-American (1956) highlight his career achievements. In 1956, under West’s direction, his high school won the state championship.
He was the quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers when they reached the 1959 NCAA title game while he was a student there. Though the Mountaineers lost, West was named the game’s MVP. A year later, in the 1960 NBA Draft, the Minneapolis Lakers picked him with the second overall pick.
