After relocating to the nation’s capital, she found work as Scott McInnis’s administrative assistant. After that, Representative Dan Schaefer hired Dana to be his press secretary, a role she filled for more than four years.
After Schaefer announced his retirement in 1998, she took a trip to the United Kingdom. In 2001, Perino relocated back to Washington and secured a position as a spokesperson for the Justice Department, where she worked for the subsequent two years.
She quickly rose through the ranks to become George Bush’s Deputy Press Secretary. When Tony Snow was receiving treatment for cancer, she filled in as White House press secretary. From 2007 to 2009, she served as the President’s full-time Press Secretary and Assistant.
Since the Bush administration was ousted, Perino has served as a political contributor for Fox News. She also appears regularly as a co-host on the panel discussion show The Five.
Upon taking office, President Obama suggested she join the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which regulates the federal government’s funding for international news and entertainment programming. This proposal has been accepted by the Senate.

She eloped to England with Peter McMahon, a British citizen she met on a flight to Denver in August 1997. They spent some time in the UK, but otherwise have always called Bay Head, NJ home. Her Vizsla, Jasper, became famous alongside Perino, but he passed away in September 2021. A few months later, she and her husband made an announcement on Fox that they had adopted another Vizsla.
