Chris Rock is the first stand-up comic to perform a Netflix special live.
On Thursday, the streaming behemoth announced that Rock will be the first performer at the company’s first-ever live, global streaming event. Only the fact that the comedy special will be available to stream in early 2023 has been made public.
According to Robbie Praw, Netflix’s vp of stand-up and comedy formats, “Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and significant comedic voices of our generation.”
The show will be Rock’s second stand-up offering on the streaming service. Chris Rock: Tamborine, his first album, was released in February of 2018.
We’re overjoyed that everyone on the planet will get to witness a live Chris Rock comedy show and take part in Netflix’s groundbreaking event. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we are grateful to Chris for continuing the tradition.
Early in 2023, roughly a year after the notorious incident at the Oscars when the comedian was slapped by Would Smith, the event will be streamed to fans.
For Netflix, this will be the first time they have streamed a comedy show, although they are no strangers to live events in general.
The springtime “Netflix is a Joke: The Festival” featured over 330 comedians performing 295 concerts at over 35 different Los Angeles locations, including the first-ever stand-up show at Dodger Stadium. In excess of 260,000 tickets were sold for the show.
In December, Rock and his comedic pal and frequent tourmate Dave Chappelle will be performing at several California venues as part of their ongoing Ego Death World Tour.
