The deadline to apply for the child tax credit is Monday. The credit provides up to $300 per month for children under the age of six, for a total of $1,800, and up to $250 per month for children aged six to seventeen, for a total of $1,500.
For those who have registered, a child tax credit payment should arrive in your bank account on Monday. Following that, the next payment is due on December 15th.
Based on the American Rescue Plan, which President Joe Biden signed into law in March, the payments began in July and will continue through December. In 2021, the first half of the total credit will get paid. When eligible individuals file their 2021 tax returns, the remaining half will get reimbursed.
According to the Tax Policy Center, 2.3 million children may be missing out on benefits of failing to submit income taxes in 2019 or 2020, according to a study released by the US Treasury Department in June.
This year, eligible beneficiaries who will receive their first payment in November will receive two installments, each of which will be a quarter of the overall payment amount. Those who receive their first payment in December will receive half of the whole amount in one installment.
It amounts to a December payment of up to $1,800 for children under six and up to $1,500 for children aged six to seventeen. That is the same sum that most other families have received in up to six monthly payments since July.
If you haven’t received your payments yet, here’s some guidance on the signup process.
